GRP Finisher (Self Employed)

When it comes to boat finishing, the role involves the meticulous process of completing and refining the exterior and interior of boats to meet high-quality standards. Skilled GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) Finishers play a vital role in ensuring that the final product not only looks aesthetically pleasing but also meets functional and safety requirements. Here's a more detailed overview:

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Surface Preparation: Prepare boat surfaces for finishing by sanding, cleaning, and filling imperfections to achieve a smooth and even foundation.

  2. Gelcoat Application: Apply gelcoat to the boat's surface, ensuring uniform coverage and a flawless finish. Gelcoat not only provides a protective layer but also contributes to the boat's visual appeal.

  3. Fairing and Sanding: Conduct fairing work to eliminate any irregularities or imperfections, followed by sanding to achieve the desired smoothness.

  4. Painting and Varnishing: Apply paints, varnishes, or other coatings as required, paying attention to color matching and achieving a consistent finish.

  5. Detailing: Attend to finer details, such as trim work, lettering, and other decorative elements, ensuring precision and alignment.

  6. Quality Checks: Conduct thorough quality checks to identify and address any defects, ensuring the final product meets high-quality standards.

  7. Collaboration: Work collaboratively with other team members, including boat builders and designers, to ensure a cohesive and well-executed final product.

  8. Material Knowledge: Have a good understanding of various finishing materials, including gelcoats, paints, and varnishes, and apply them appropriately based on the boat's specifications.

  9. Documentation: Maintain accurate records of work performed, including materials used, processes followed, and any deviations from standard procedures.

Requirements:

  • Experience: Several years of experience as a GRP Finisher, preferably in the marine industry, demonstrating expertise in boat finishing.

  • Attention to Detail: A keen eye for detail is crucial to achieve the high-quality finish expected in boat construction.

  • Knowledge of Boat Design: Familiarity with boat design principles and the ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications.

  • Team Collaboration: Effective communication and collaboration skills to work seamlessly with other team members.

  • Problem-Solving: The ability to identify and address challenges during the finishing process, ensuring a successful outcome.

Boat finishing is a critical phase in the boat manufacturing process, contributing significantly to the overall appearance, durability, and value of the final product. Skilled GRP Finishers play a key role in bringing a boat from construction to its polished, finished state.
